The Quarterly Median Profile Report, every edition
By Kyle Torrero, Chief Economist · October 24, 2026
Every quarter the FDIC adds up every bank in America and publishes the total. Added up, the industry looks like its biggest banks. The Quarterly Median Profile Report is the same report for the bank in the middle: the median, for the whole industry and for five size groups.
It now runs six quarters, from the first quarter of 2025 through the second quarter of 2026. The second-quarter 2026 edition came out first. The five before it were computed this month, after it went out.
Each quarter starts by reproducing the FDIC's own report from the same bank filings. The industry figures have to match what the FDIC printed, to the decimal it printed, before the median bank is computed from the same file. Where a figure doesn't match, that quarter's notes say so. Two quarters pass on a rounding rule; they're marked below.
Forty-seven measures are defined the same way in every quarter, and those make up the time series. Where the FDIC changed how a chart is defined, the series starts when the new definition does. Nothing got quietly redefined, which is more than I can say for my grocery bill.
Nothing before 2025 is here. The FDIC's figures for older quarters can't be reproduced from bank filings as they stand today, because the filings have been amended since. In 2008 the savings institutions filed a different report altogether.

Read the notes to users first. Nobody does. The third-quarter edition will be out before the FDIC's.
